Glogster

Click here to view my Glog

Assignment Title: Glogster

Uses in the Classroom:  I found Glogster to be a really fun tool to use and I love the graphics.  I also found that inserting video and linking to websites and images was straightforward and simple.  As I was creating my Glog I was thinking off all they ways this could be used in the classroom.  The biggest idea that came to mind was creating a Glog in place of the traditional book report. Students could organize the important information from the book in a Glog and include images and video to enhance their project.  They could then print their Glog's and post them in the classroom and in my school they could present their Glog's using our interactive Smartboards!

Issues to Consider:
Completing an assignment using Glogster would require that all students have access to a computer and they must create an account.  Much like most of the tools we have used during this class Glogster only offers a free 30 day trial and there is a fee after that.  Students would also need to be mindful of using appropriate images and video to add to their Glog.  They must be aware of the copyright laws and follow them.

Mind Mapping Multimedia using Gliffy

Assignment Title: Mind Mapping Multimedia using Gliffy

Uses in the classroom:
I could see students using Gliffy to create mind maps in all content areas.  In Social Studies students could create mind maps to demonstrate their knowledge of the three branches of government and the responsibilities of each branch. They could include pictures of places (White House, Supreme Court) and people (President, Senators) to enhance their mind map.  As part of a Social Studies/Writing biography project students could create a mind map much like we did on a particular person.  For students who struggle with writing this could be a great alternative to the traditional research paper.

As a teacher I would use mind mapping to display the relationships between polygons in our geometry unit.  One of the fifth grade common core standards requires students to be able to group/organize polygons based on their properties.  It is a lot of information and some polygons fit into more than one category. I would  present this information in a mind map using visuals and arrows/lines to connect categories.  I would print the mind map out and allow students to refer to it during our lessons and as a tool to help them complete their assignments.

Issues to consider:
I really liked using Gliffy to complete my assignment and I found it to be very user friendly.  I can see students being able to use this software with ease.  Unfortunately, after the trial period is up there is a fee to use Gliffy.  Many schools including my own don't have the funds to purchase memberships.  It is also important to make sure students are using factual information from appropriate sources to create their mind map.  Students also need to have foundational skills for sequencing and organizing information.
